feature detection theory
n. 1. In perception, the idea that the visual and perhaps other sensory systems have individual detectors for particular sorts of features, and perception is a process of adding the features together into perceptual wholes. 2. In categorization, the idea that categorization of objects occurs through the breaking down of the objects into smaller units, which are compared with lists of criteria for each possible category of objects.
