escape-avoidance learning

n. A form of operant conditioning in which an organism learns to move away from an aversive stimulus, eventually avoiding it altogether. Thus if a person is given a shock on the seat after a bell rings, he or she soon learns to leave the seat when the bell rings and soon will not sit in the same seat at all.
