n. A similarity of two or more things such that one may replace another without altering a situation. Thus five $1 bills are equivalent to one $5 bill. In cross-cultural studies, it refers to the state when measures of a psychological construct mean the same thing in the cultures being tested and are measured equally well in all the cultures being tested. It is a necessary condition for data obtained from two or more cultures to be comparable to each other.
