equity theory
n. A theory of social justice in which people consider as fair outcomes those in which they receive the same ratio of benefit to investment that the others to whom they compare themselves receive. Investments and benefits can be of many kinds, including time, affection, and money among many others. Inequity is said to be experienced as uncomfortable even when it is in one's favor and to motivate attempts to create a more equitable system.
