n. 1. The theory that the genetic or inherent characteristics of an organism interact with the environment so that the actual characteristics of an individual are a product of both heredity and environment. 2. In genetics, the appearance of a heritable change in gene function that is not the result of a change in the DNA. 3. In developmental psychology, the point of view that as the organism grows, it interacts with the environment with different goals.
