depth of processing
n. The degree to which a stimulus is processed at different levels of mind which affects the likelihood of its being remembered. Thus a stimulus like bird may be seen as a pattern of light and dark, a string of letters, a word, a word with a rich set of connections, and something meaningful related to our self. The more of these levels or types of processing which occur the more likely is the memory of seeing the stimulus to be remembered.
