defensive attribution

n. A bias in estimating the probability of a threatening event so as to minimize the perceived threat to one's self and so escape anxiety about the event. Thus a sailor may attribute a boat's sinking to the captain's error rather than an unpredictable chance combination of weather events, as it makes it more likely he or she can control the occurrence of the event by not drinking and thus lessen anxiety.
