n. Cyclic guanosine monophosphate (GMP) is a compound found in retinal rods and cones which regulates the sodium channels in those cells, increasing and decreasing the likelihood of action potentials depending on the state of its ring structure, which can be altered by light. It is also found in smooth muscle cells and facilitates the engorgement of the penis and the clitoris during sexual excitement.
