curare

n. Any of several plant extracts that act as neurotoxins by blocking the actions of acetylcholine at the synapse, resulting in paralysis and death due to asphyxiation when breathing ceases as a result of paralysis. It is used to poison arrows and spears by indigenous people in the areas where curare containing plants grow.
