cupula

n. Any of three dome-shaped gelatinous masses within each of the three semicircular canals of the ear which are part of our sense of balance and movement. The cupulae are pressured by movements of the liquid inside the semicircular canals and in turn press on the crista, which activates hair cells within the crista which give rise to nerve impulses toward the neural centers of balance and movement.
