In Piagetian psychology, the understanding that physical quantity is not the same as an individual perceptive dimension so that one dimension can be altered and the quantity remain the same as long as there are compensatory changes in the other dimensions. As an example, a tall thin bucket of sand can hold the same amount of sand if it is squashed in such a way that the enlargement of the horizontal dimension matches the decrease in the vertical one.
