conditioned stimulus

n. A stimulus which does not initially provoke a response but begins to do so after repeated pairing with a stimulus which does provoke a response. Thus if a dog hears a bell immediately before being fed, it will start to salivate when it hears the bell without being fed; the bell will be the conditioned stimulus.
