commitment

n. 1. Confinement to a mental institution usually without the consent of the person involved. In most states, involuntary commitment is possible only if a person presents a clear danger to herself/himself or to others.

2. A cognitive or emotional state of intention to follow a course of action regardless of obstacles. 3. Financial investment in an enterprise or some other business matter. 4. Investment of material or psychological resources in a person, group, idea, or activity such that withdrawal entails costs and therefore the investment is maintained.
