cognitive schema
n. A mental representation of some aspect of past experience or some part of one's general knowledge. Schemas are a basic unit of analysis in some areas of cognitive psychology. It is supposed by cognitive psychologists that schemas are constantly being created, modified, and imposed on perceptions, situations, understanding, and processes. In cognitive therapy there is an attempt to change maladaptive cognitive schemas.
