cochlea

n. A hollow snail-shaped bone in the inner ear. It receives pressure from the middle ear via the oval window, pressure which travels through the diminishing winding tube of the cochlea to the organ of Corti, within which hair cells transmute pressure waves into impulses in the auditory nerve which we experience as sound.
