clozapine

n. An atypical (recent) antipsychotic medication of the dibenzodiazepine family first introduced to the U.S. market in 1990. It has effects at both the dopaminergic and serotonergic receptor sites. It is an effective antipsychotic agent but suppresses immune function (agranulocytosis) in a significant minority of patients, and so its use is usually limited to patients who have not responded to other drugs.
