cataplexy

n. 1. A sudden loss of muscle tone and control, sometimes localized and sometimes in the entire body, which leads to physical collapse and is usually preceded by an extreme emotional situation to which cataplexy is believed to be a response. 2. A defense against predation in some animals consisting of complete immobility without muscle tone which makes the animal appear to be dead.
