carpentered world
n. The visual environment of urban dwellers, which is largely a constructed rather than a natural environment and was supposed to have more straight lines and right angles than natural environments, resulting in differences between rural and urban dwellers in visual perception. Little evidence has supported this theory in terms of either differences in perception or the greater preponderance of straight lines and right angles in urban environments.
