bipolar affective disorder

n. A family of psychopathologies characterized by wide swings in emotional state or mood. Bipolar I disorder is characterized by manic episodes alternating with either depressed periods or periods of relative normality. Bipolar II disorder is characterized by recurrent major depressive episodes interspersed with periods of hypomania. Cyclothymic disorder is characterized by chronic fluctuation of hypomania and depressive episodes.
