binocular disparity

n. The differences in the retinal images between the two eyes in viewing a three-dimensional scene, which allow an estimate of the depth of different parts of the scene. The difference in retinal images in the two eyes is called parallax and increases as an object nears the eye so that the image of near objects has greater disparity while distant objects have less disparity in the images cast on the two retinas.
