benefit-cost analysis
n. A theoretical viewpoint which considers relationships between the expenditure of time, energy, or resources of the organism and the gains to the organism of things, relationships, and situations which are deemed beneficial to the organism. This analysis is often used in economic approaches, in which costs and benefits are expressed monetarily. In behavioral ecology the analysis is most often expressed in relative survival rates or biological energy units. Also called cost-benefit analysis.
