avoidance gradient

n. A graph of the variation of the strength of an aversive stimulus to motivate avoidance or escape behavior across distance. Avoidance gradients are generally steeper than approach gradients; thus aversive conditioning is more powerful when the noxious stimulus is close but approach gradients reach farther.
