average deviation

n. The arithmetic mean of a set of deviations that is the sum of a set of deviations divided by the number of deviations. This statistic is seldom used as in many data sets it is near zero and so is minimally informative as to the distribution from which it arises. Statisticians prefer the standard deviation, which is the square root of the average of the squared deviations.
