autism

n. A pervasive developmental disorder of early childhood characterized by impaired social learning and communication; restricted interests, activities, and learning; diminished imaginative thought; and stereotyped or repetitive nonfunctional movements or verbalizations. The usual age of onset is before age 3 and the symptoms can vary across an individual childhood and are usually associated with some intellectual retardation.
