attachment disorder

n. A disorder of social interaction in infancy and early childhood in which the child displays disturbed and developmentally inappropriate patterns of social relating in the presence of inadequate care by adults. Symptoms include inappropriate failure to initiate and respond in social interactions (inhibited type) or an indiscriminate overresponse to all social opportunities (disinhib- ited type). Also called reactive attachment disorder.
