atmosphere effect

n. 1. The tendency of a person to behave or perceive in one situation as he/she does in another in which the behavior may be more appropriate. Thus a Catholic may cross himself or herself when entering a civic building that has the atmosphere of a church, or a person may use hand gestures to communicate while speaking on the telephone. 2. In person perception, the way possession of one trait colors the perception of other traits or acts.
