n. A false finding in research due to random variation in data. Most statistical procedures make the assumption that when an error has less than a 20%, 10%, or 1% chance of occurring, an error has not occurred, when in fact errors do occur in 20%, 10%, or 1% of cases, depending on the level of confidence selected in performing statistical tests.
