applied research

n. Utilization of the scientific method to solve practical problems or questions through the application of information. Applied research builds upon the knowledge gained through basic research in order to address real-world problems. For example, while a basic research question might be “What neurological processes are involved in the process of forgetting?” applied research goes one step further to ask, “How can our understanding of the neurological processes involved in the process of forgetting be used to enhance memory strategies in patients with Alzheimer’s disease?” Basic and applied research are closely linked, with the primary difference being the immediate goal of the research process; basic research has the goal of discovery for the sake of knowledge while applied research targets discovery for the sake of practical application.   - BJM
