n. 1. In general, anything that happens before some given event. 2. In linguistics, the noun or noun phrase to which a later part of a sentence refers. 3. In logical propositions of the “If A then B” form, the circumstances to which the “If” refers, as opposed to the consequent, to which the “then” portion of the proposition refers.
