amphetamine effects
n. Short-term effects include sensations of alertness, well-being, sexual desire, euphoria, inability to keep still, talkativeness, and a jittery feeling, followed by fatigue, social withdrawal, and depression as the drug effects fade. Physically amphetamines produce raised heart rate and blood pressure, suppressed immune function and sleep, increased blood flow to skeletal muscles and away from the digestive tract and teeth, and suppressed appetite. Prolonged use can result in anxiety, panic, acute paranoia, dental problems, and malnutrition. Amphetamines are widely and illegally used for dieting, staying awake, and the euphoria of high doses. Amphetamines are addicting in the traditional sense of producing tolerance and withdrawal. The withdrawal is due to an insufficiency of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain, which results in a sense of depression, fatigue, and lack of motivation.
