n. 1. Putting others’ interests before one’s own sometimes to the point of sacrificing one's own interests or life in the process. 2. In sociobiology, furthering the interests of those with whom one shares genetic relationship while sacrificing one's immediate interests for a longer-term genetic gain in assuring that one's genes continue in the gene pool of the next or future generations.
