n. The use of alcohol in a manner that produces significant negative consequences for an individual or those around the individual. The use of alcohol to escape from situational or psychological problems, which leads to the syndrome commonly called alcoholism or alcohol dependence. Alcohol produces a strong addiction with tolerance and withdrawal that can be life threatening. Addiction usually marks the difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
