The first stage in the general adaptation to stress syndrome during which a person experiences a shock with dropping blood pressure and then physiological arousal with elevated serum levels of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol. In the general adaptation syndrome alarm stage is followed by the resistance stage and then the collapse stage.
