adrenal cortex

n. The external portion of the adrenal gland produces mineralocorticosteroids, androgens, and glucocorticosteroids, all of which contribute to bodily homeostasis. Of particular importance is the glucocorticosteroid cortisol, which is released when the adrenal cortex is stimulated by adrenocorticotropic hormone from the pituitary gland. The release of cortisol is a response to stress.   - VS
