action potential
n. A change in voltage potential across the surface membrane of the axon of a neuron caused by an influx of sodium ions, which can build into a wave of the action potential down the axon, leading to the release of neurotransmitters at the end of the axon in the synaptic cleft, which, in turn, may cause a change in the action potential for the next axons in a nerve fiber.
